VIU’s New Faculty Orientation to Teaching
Making Choices for Student Engagement and Learning The purpose of the New Faculty Orientation to Teaching at VIU is to introduce you to resources for designing learning experiences for your students, to explore with you best practices for fostering critical thinking in students, and to provide you with an opportunity to meet and work with colleagues from across the disciplines at VIU. We will not only address several core ideas for teaching successfully at VIU, but also indicate specific ways of engaging students in the classroom and increasing the positive impact of the choices you make as a teacher. One section of the session will introduce you to the learning technologies VIU has to offer. We will discuss why you might choose one tool over another – and why you might not want to use technology at all! You will leave this session knowing what learning technologies are most appropriate for you and your learners, and with resources to help you decide how to continue developing your comfort with those tools that you decide to use.
