Activating Your VIULearn Course

Once you have had a chance to copy your course materials and prepare your course for students, the last step is to activate your course. All courses in VIULearn are “Inactive” by default, so that student will not see a course listed unless the instructor chooses to use it;because of this in order for your students to gain access to your course you must manually change it from “Inactive” to “Active”. Below is an example of what your courses may look like from your My Home, with an example of an active and inactive course.

How do I know if my course is active?

All courses in VIULearn are created in the Scheduling and Workload System (SAWS). They are "inactive" by default so if instructors choose not to use VIULearn the students cannot see or access empty course shells. All courses are also automatically given a "start date" 30 days before the course is scheduled and an "end date" 90 days after the course is over. The start and end dates are only important if the course is active, because no matter what other settings change an inactive course is always hidden from students. There is a table summarizing these settings below.

Start Date

Student Access

Not Passed

For example:

On August 3rd, an instructor activates their course and sets the start date to September 20th. Students will not be able to access the course until September 20th, even though the course is active.

Courses that are inactive will have a muted course image and will say "(Inactive)" on the course tile Please see the screen shot below.
