Grading Discussion Topics

If you are using the VIULearn gradebook, it is advisable to create items and associate them to your Discussion activities before grading in either the Discussion or Grades tools.

You will be able to tell what Discussion topics folders are associated with the VIULearn gradebook by looking for a ruler icon, highlighted in orange in the image below:

Below the discussion topic title on topics attached to the gradebook, text appears that says includes assessment. Topics not attached to the gradebook have no text.

In the example above, Graded Discussion 2 is not associated with the VIULearn gradebook.

Associating a Discussion with a Grade Item

  1. Create a grade item
  2. Choose Communciation and Discussions
  3. Use the drop-down arrow to the right of Discussion topic and choose Edit Topic 
  4. On the Assessment tab, under Grade Item, use the drop-down menu to choose the grade item you created
  • You will only see grade items that are not associated with any other tools

Under Score Out Of type in the number you will be marking the Discussion out of

  • It is advisable to make sure the Max Points of the grade item and the Score Out Of box on the Discussion are the same number
  • Make sure to scroll to the bottom of the page and choose either Save and Close or Save
