Assessment Tools

The Competencies tool allows you to build up an inventory of skills and knowledge your students have acquired. Most often, this tool is used across a program or degree stream.

Rubrics are an assessment tool used to evaluate an activity or item based on a predefined set of criteria. They help ensure that activities and items are evaluated fairly and consistently. You can attach rubrics to grade items, dropboxes, discussions and other assessment tools. Rubrics help students to understand the requirements of an assignment, and a well-built rubric can reduce overall marking time.

The Assignments tool allows students to hand in assignments electronically, without having to use email, eliminating the need to collect assignments in class. The Assignments tool allows you to see student submission times, download assignment submissions to your computer or view submissions with the document viewer, and return submissions with grades and feedback.

The Quizzes tool enables you to create and manage online quizzes and exams. You can control the length of time a quiz is available, how long users are allowed to take a quiz, and what they see when they have submitted. Once you receive completed quizzes from students, you can view quiz statistics such as grade distribution, grade average, question statistics, and user statistics on the Statistics page.

The Grades tool allows you to build a gradebook that is easily viewable by your students, allowing you and your students view their grade progress through the course. Please note the VIULearn gradebook is not connected to the official gradebook for Vancouver Island University.

Surveys are an excellent way to solicit feedback from users regarding any aspect of your course. For example, they can be used as a method of collecting course evaluations,mid-year reviews, or researching users' learning style and content delivery preferences.

ePortfolio is a personal portfolio tool for students. The ePortfolio tool is not course- specific, so students can access their ePortfolios from their My Home page as well.

Class Progress
You can use Class Progress to track their students' overall progress and prepare progress reports, while students can use Class Progress to keep track of all of their course-specific assignments and feedback.

VIULearn Communication Tools

Use the Discussions tool in your course to: Encourage users to share thoughts on course material with their peers, set up forums for users to ask questions, pose questions for the class to debate, discuss the answers to an assignment, or create forums for groups to work on group assignments.

The email tool in VIULearn allows you to easily email your classlist, or individual students. If you email a student within VIULearn they will receive the email within the system, and if they have an email on file with registration will also receive the email at that address. If students email you within the system, it is automatically forwarded to your address.

Use the Classlist tool to view who's enrolled in your course, check users' online statuses, and send email messages. The Classlist tool enables you to add or remove students and instructors from your course.

This is the same announcements area as the one you see on your Course Home page. Since Course Home is often the first page that users often see when they log in or access your course, the Announcements widget is a good area for displaying important information, like updates, changes, and new information.

You can use groups to organize users’ work on projects and assignments, or you can create special work areas for users with different learning needs. Users can belong to multiple groups within the same course. Each group can have its own discussion forums and dropbox folders. You can grade members of groups individually or as a team.

Online Rooms
Blackboard Collaborate Ultra is a web-based video and audio conferencing system which allows real-time communication between instructors and students. Instructors can create an online meeting room from within their VIULearn course site and schedule meetings between the whole class or individual groups. Within the online meeting space instructors can deliver audio or video lectures, text chat with students, engage in class discussions, share resources and multimedia or share their desktop.

 Faculty Tools

The Links tool enables you to provide URL links to external web sites, quicklinks, and internal course offering areas that are useful to users in your course. All links are organized into categories. Categories ensure better organization of links and enable users to quickly find the information they need.

A checklist is a way to highlight important or required assignments, readings, or other items to complete. Each checklist contains one or more categories, into which checklist items are organized. Students are able to manually check items as they complete them, allow them to keep track of their tasks.

The Glossary tool allows you to store terms and their definitions. Users can access this glossary and search for particular terms, but cannot add items to the glossary.

Course Builder
Course Builder is one way you can build structure for your course. This tool is best suited for faculty who need to integrate publisher content into their course. Most tasks related to building and organizing your course can be done from the Content tool.

Manage Files
The Manage Files tool is a file management system for your course. You can use this tool to organize and upload files associated with your course. We recommend that you organize your files into folders, creating a folder for each module of content.
