VIU Teaching Awards

These Teaching Design and Practice Awards will formally recognize the excellence in achievements in all facets of teaching and student learning at Vancouver Island University. The awards focus on teaching design and practice of learning experiences for students which refers to how a faculty member designs, develops, and offers learning opportunities for students around discipline-specific learning outcomes.

Brightspace Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning

The Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) and Brightspace by D2L are pleased to invite submissions for the Brightspace Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning. This award recognizes innovative approaches that promote student-centered teaching and learning at the post-secondary level.

The award is open to instructors, both nationally and internationally, who are currently teaching at a post-secondary institution, regardless of discipline, level, or term of appointment; however applications will only be accepted in English or French. Candidates need not be members of STLHE to apply.
Award winners (up to five per year) receive the following:

  1. $1,200 for registration and travel to attend Brightspace's FUSION Conference.
  2. $1,000 for registration and travel to attend STLHE’s Annual Conference.
  3. Two year membership in STLHE.

Submission Deadline

The deadline for applications is the beginning of March yearly.

3M National Teaching Fellowship

In 1986, the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) and 3M Canada partnered to recognize exceptional contributions to teaching and learning at Canadian universities. The community of 3M National Teaching Fellows embodies the highest ideals of teaching excellence and scholarship with a commitment to encourage and support the educational experience of every learner.

Up to ten Fellowships are selected annually.

Canada now has 278 3M National Teaching Fellows, representing a broad range of academic disciplines from over 80 small and large Canadian universities. They work to support teaching and learning at their own institutions and through larger, collaborative initiatives, supported by the Council of 3M Fellows and the STLHE.
