Create a clip

Video clips

Video Clips enable you to send a portion of a video, beginning from a chosen start point and extending to the end of the media content. A Video Segment has both a defined start point and a defined end point. Users will be able to see the total duration of the original video but will only be able to play the video from the defined start and end point. 

If you want others to be able to create clips from your media, you can enable that in your media settings. When someone else makes a clip from your content, this does not create a new copy of your content. A viewer created clip is just a custom URL to your video that starts at a specific point in the timeline of your video. A segment has a start and end time but otherwise is the same as a clip. Only people who already could view your video can view the clip or segment. 

Clips and segments can be helpful if students want to calrify specific point from a recording in class. For example, if you recorded a class session and shared it in VIULearn, a student could send a link to a segment to you along with a follow up question. This can help you both understand the context of their question. 

  1. Navigate to VIUTube and select Manage Media. 
  2. Find and hover your mouse over the video in question. Click Play to open the video in the Media Player.
  3. Click the Play button to begin playing the video.
  4. Select the Settings cogwheel. Then choose Create Clip.
  5. Choose whether to create a Clip or a Segment. Enter the required information for either a Clip or Segment. 
    • A Clip begins playing at the current time shown and plays to the end of the video. 
    • A Segment has a defined start and end point. 
    • Users will be able to see the total duration of the original video but will only be able to play the video from the defined start and end point. 
  6. Click Copy Link to copy the URL for the Video Clip or Segment. Paste the URL into a text editor or browser to access the Clip. 

By default, other users will not be able to create clips or segments of videos that you own in VIUTube. The ability for viewers to create Clips and Segments must be enabled by the Content Creator. This is accessible through the Details pane.

  1. Navigate to the Manage Media area in VIUTube. 
  2. Find and hover your mouse over the video in question. Choose More from the menu on the right side of the thumbnail.
  3. Select Links. 
  4. Under Allow Viewers to Create Sub-Clips, use the radio buttons to select Enable.
  5. Click Save Links to save your change
