Assess Assignments Online

VIULearn's Assignment tool allows you to add feedback on your students' submissions in a variety of ways. You can write feedback in the provided text-box, attach feedback files, record audio or video feedback, evaluate with a rubric, or give the submission a score which you can choose to have automatically included in the gradebook.

To learn more about using the Annotation tool to add feedback directly onto a students' submission, please see the Annotations page.

  1. From the course navigation bar, choose Assessment and then Assignments from the dropdown menu.

  2. Click on the name of the Assignment Submission folder you wish to grade.

  3. Click on the student's submission that you wish to grade.

  4. If you have inserted a score for the Assignment Submission folder in the Grade Out of field, you will be able to provide students a grade on the assignment by inserting a number in the Overall Grade input field.

  5. In the Assessment panel on the right hand side of the screen. You will be able to provide student feedback on their Assignment by inserting text into the Overall Feedback field. You can also insert images, videos, and other media elements by using the HTML editor options.

  6. If you wish to provide students an external document as a part of your feedback, click the File Upload button (cloud icon with an arrow through the middle). Find and upload the document you wish to attach from your computer.

  7. If you wish to record a short 2 minute audio clip for your students, click the Record Audio button.

If you would like to record more then 2 minutes or would like to record video feedback, we would recommend doing so using VIUTube's Express capture tool.

  8. If your student has uploaded a text document (Word, PDF, etc) you will be able to use VIULearn's built in Annotations tool to markup and provide feedback directly on the document.

You can find more information about using these Annotations tools on the Annotations page.

  9. Once you have finished, click the Publish button to save and release your score and feedback to the student. Alternatively, click the Save Draft button to save your changes.

  10. You can navigate to the next or previous student's submission by clicking the arrow icons in the upper right hand corner of the page.

Associating an Assignment Submission Folder with a Grade Item

If you are using the VIULearn Grades tool, it is advisable to create items and associate them to your Assignment Submission folders before grading in the Assignments tool.

You will be able to tell which Assignment Submission folders are associated with the Grades tool by looking for a keyhole icon next to the names of the Assignment Submission folders in the Assignments tool.

These steps assume you have already set up your grade items and categories in the VIULearn Grades tool.

  1. From the course navigation bar, choose Assessment and then Assignments from the dropdown menu.

  2. Click the downward arrow next to the Assignment Submission folder in question. Select Edit Assignment from the dropdown menu.

  3. If you have not done so already, assign a score for the Assignment Submission folder in the Grade Out of field.

  4. Click the In Grade Book text. From the dropdown menu, select Edit or Link to Existing.

  5. Click the radio button beside the Link to an existing grade item text.

  6. Choose the Grade Item you wish to select from the dropdown menu.

  7. Click the blue OK button.

  8. Once you have finished editing, click the blue Save and Close button.
