Create a Menu

By default, the primary navigation menu of your VIUBlog site will contain all the Pages you have Published on your site in the chronological order that you have created them in. If you would like your Pages to appear in a different order, would like your Posts to appear in the primary navigation menu, or would like to add multiple navigation menus to your site, you can do so by creating a customized navigation menu. 

Customize Your Menu

  1. In the Dashboard of the VIUBlog site you wish to add a navigation menu to, select Appearance in the navigation sidebar. 

  2. Click Customize.

  3. Click Menus from the navigation sidebar. 

  4. Click the Create New Menu button.

  5. Give your new menu a name. If you would like this menu to be your primary navigation menu, make sure you click the checkbox next to the Primary heading.

  6. Click the Create Menu button.

  7. Create your navigation menu:
    • By default, you will see a list of all the available Pages on your site. You can add these Pages to the menu by clicking the checkbox next to the name of the Page you wish to add. Then click the Add to Menu button.

      If you wish to add Posts to your menu, click on the Posts heading. Then, click the checkboxes next to the posts you wish to add to your menu. Then click the Add to Menu button.

    • You can also add Custom Links, Categories, and Event Categories to your navigation menu. This webpage will mostly be focusing on adding Posts and Pages to a navigation menu, as these are the most commonly used options.  

    • Once your Posts and Pages have been added to the menu, you can reorganize the order that they appear in by dragging and dropping the Posts/Pages in the list. 

    • You can also categorize Posts/Pages underneath another Post/Page by dragging and dropping the Post/Page to the right of the Post/Page you would like it to appear under. 

  8. Once you have finished editing, click the Save Menu button to save your changes.

Add a Secondary Navigation Menu

If you would like to create a secondary navigation menu that can be inserted into a customized location on your VIUBlog site (such as the footer or sidebar) you can do so by creating and adding a Navigation Menu Widget.

  1. In the Dashboard of the VIUBlog site you with to add a navigation menu to, select Appearance in the navigation sidebar. 

  2. Click Customize.

  3. Click Widgets from the navigation sidebar.

  4. If your theme allows you to add Widgets in multiple locations, you will see a list of all the available areas that Widgets can be added to your VIUBlog site. Click the name of the area you wish to add a Widget to. 

  5. Click the Add Block button (plus icon).
     
  6. Search and select Navigation Menu

  7. If you wish, give your Navigation Menu a title. Then, select the customized menu you had previously created from the Select Menu field. 

  8. Click the Done button.

  9. Once you have finished adding widgets to your site, click the blue Publish button to save your changes.
