Self Assessment Rubric for Students

If you would like to have students fill out a rubric as a part of an assignment, you can do so by attaching that rubric as a file to your assignment submission folder. Students will then be able to download that file, fill it out on their device, and then upload that rubric file back to the Assignment Submission folder for you (the instructor) to view.

Creating the Self-Assessment Rubric

You can create a rubric in a number of online tools or downloadable software such as Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat. Whatever tool you end up using, it is recommended that you make sure that your rubric can be easily opened and edited by students.

One way you can go about making your rubric easily assessible and editable for your students is by creating a fillable PDF document in Adobe Acrobat Pro. All employees at VIU can request an Adobe Acrobat Pro license by emailing the IT Department at ithelp@viu.ca

Once you have Adobe Acrobat Pro installed and setup on your device, you can find some tutorials on how to create fillable PDF documents here:

Please Note: The Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning does not provide support for Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Pro. Therefore, our ability to assist you in using any of these tools will be limited.

Once you have created and exported your rubric, you can add that rubric as a file to your assignment submission folder. Doing so will allow students to be able to download the self-assessment rubric when they go to view the assignment.

  1. Select Assessment from the course navigation bar. From the dropdown menu, select Assignments.

  2. Click the downward arrow next to the assignment submission folder you wish to add the self-assessment rubric to. Select Edit Assignment from the dropdown menu.

Alternatively, you can create a new assignment submission folder by clicking the New Assignment button.

  3. Click the File Upload button (cloud with arrow icon).

  4. Drag and drop the self-assessment rubric into the upload field provided. Alternatively, click the Upload button and find and select the file you wish to attach to this assignment submission folder.
