Student Orientation to VIU Learning Technology

The Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning offers several options to help orient students to VIU’s Learning Technologies. Whichever option you decide is best for your students, our Student Orientation will give students an overview of the tools available and teach them how and where to find support if they need it in the future.

Orientation Webinar

CIEL staff will run a number of webinars during the semester startup for Fall and Spring semesters each year. Students can register for a webinar that fits their schedule, or you can choose a webinar that fits best with your course schedule and plan on your students attending that option.

The VIU Learning Technologies Orientation for Students webinar will briefly introduce the video conferencing tool Zoom. Students will see where and how to access VIULearn, VIUTube and VIUBlogs. Within VIULearn, students will learn how to register for the latest version of the self-paced VIULearn Student Orientation course, which they will be able to access for up to a year. They can explore that course at their own pace to learn how to navigate VIULearn and practice various tasks and activities that they might be asked to complete in their courses. They will also learn how to adjust their VIULearn settings and notifications for the best online experience. There will be some time at the end of the orientation to directly address some participant questions.

Students will learn how to access additional support going forward, and will be introduced to at least one of CIEL’s frontline support specialists who students may interact with in the future. Follow-up resources will be sent to participants about the information covered in the orientation.

For anyone who is unable to attend a life orientation webinar, we recorded a webinar from Fall 2020 which they can view at any time.

VIULearn Orientation Course

This fully self-paced course is designed to teach students everything they need to know in order to successfully navigate VIULearn and submit course activities. The online course contains step by step guides as well as practice activities to allow students to build comfort in the online system.

The self-paced VIULearn Student Orientation course is available to all students and faculty whether or not they attend an orientation webinar. Steps for how to register for this course.

Finally, instructors also have the option of importing all or part of the self-paced VIULearn Student Orientation course into their own course shells. If you would like to use this option, please contact us at LearnSupport@viu.ca for assistance.
