Have you wanted to design assignments that offer flexibility and choice for students, but still align with learning outcomes? Have you expanded the type of learning materials you use in your courses and would like to continue doing so? If so, this course redesign experience is for you.  In Designing for All,  faculty participants will engage in an exploration of the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and examine the small (or big) changes you could make to your course design to help meet the needs of ALL learners. Designing for All: A blended learning series focused on flexible and accessible course (re)design

COVID or not, many of us are now (re)considering our course design process and striving to create the most accessible experience for ALL learners. Alongside this, the disruption of our teaching and learning practices has provided the opportunity for us to consider what may or may not work best in those practices.

For example, do you find yourself wondering how to balance synchronous and asynchronous learning activities? Have you wanted to design assignments that offer flexibility and choice for students, but still align with learning outcomes? Have you expanded the type of learning materials you use in your courses and would like to continue doing so? If so, this course redesign experience is for you.

In Designing for All,  faculty participants will engage in an exploration of the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and examine the small (or big) changes you could make to your course design to help meet the needs of ALL learners. In the spirit of accessible learning, we have designed this session in a way that encourages faculty to explore the content areas  that resonate with them. As well, the delivery provides a balance of asynchronous self-directed online learning, and synchronous, collaborative online learning.

Session outline:

  • Synchronous session with all participants: Kick off, orientation, content, and discussion - Monday, May 10, 1:30 - 3:00 pm
  • Asynchronous engagement: CIEL-designed asynchronous VIULearn experience.  Explore and engage resources and activities at your own pace.
  • Synchronous Workshops (choose 1-3). Participants will choose which one(s) of the following they are interested in:
    • Multiple Means of Representation: Creating Flexible and Accessible Materials - Tuesday, May 18, 10:00 - 11:30 am
    • Multiple Means of Engagement: Creating Flexible and Accessible Learning Activities - Wednesday, May 19, 2:30 - 4:00 pm
    • Multiple Means of Action and Expression: Creating Flexible and Accessible Assignments - Thursday, May 20, 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
  • Optional 1:1 course design consultations with CIEL staff members
  • Finale: Synchronous session where participants share their key learnings and the changes they have made or will make to course(s). - Thursday, May 27, 9:00 - 10:30 am

Join us this May for a new course design experience, and begin to (re)design your courses to include greater flexibility and accessibility for ALL students.
