VIU Campus

Create a Zoom Account

All VIU instructional employees can set up a Zoom account by contacting the Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning (CIEL) at learnsupport@viu.ca. Instructional employees will be granted licensed accounts for the remainder of the 2023-2024 academic year.

An institutional Licensed Zoom account gives you the ability to host meetings for up to 300 participants with no time limits, and access to features such as screen sharing, polling, and automatically generated captions. All data related to your institutional account and meetings you host is processed and stored in Canada.

Non-instructional employees who had a VIU Zoom account prior to January 31, 2023 may retain access to their institutional account with a basic Zoom account until the end of the 2023-2024 academic year. However, these employees are strongly encouraged to move all of their video conferencing to Microsoft Teams. You can find support resources to help you get started in the IT Knowledge Base.

With a basic account, you can host meetings with up to 100 participants with a maximum length of 40 minute.

Login to Zoom

Employees who have an existing Zoom account under the VIU license can log in to Zoom using their VIU credentials through SSO.

  1. Go to http://viu.zoom.us
  2. Click Employee Login.
  3. Log in using your VIU Computer Account

If you do not already have a Zoom account connected to VIU’s license, you will see an error. If you are an instructor at VIU who needs Zoom for teaching, please connect with CIEL at learnsupport@viu.ca to request an account.

Download the Zoom Application

There are two different ways you can join a Zoom meeting. You can join a Zoom meeting from your Internet Browser. Alternatively, you can join the Zoom meeting by using the Zoom application that has been downloaded and installed on your device.

For the best user experience, we would recommend downloading the Zoom application to your device. This is because some features will not be available to you if you join the Zoom meeting using your Internet Browser.

If you are using a VIU issued computer, the Zoom application should already be downloaded and installed on your device. If you are using a VIU issued computer and the Zoom application has not been installed on your device, you can install it from the Software Center or contact the IT Helpdesk for further assistance.

If you are using a personal computer for your work, you can download the Zoom application to your device by navigating to the Download Center on Zoom's website.

Login to the Zoom Application

In order to gain full host controls in your meetings, you will need to be logged into your account on the Zoom application that has been installed on your device.

  1. Open the Zoom application on your device.
  2. Select Sign In.
  3. Select Sign In with SSO from the login options available.
  4. Enter VIU as your domain name. Click the Continue button.

  5. If you are not already logged into your VIU Computer Account in your Internet Browser, you will be prompted to enter your VIU Computer Account credentials.
  6. Upon login, your Internet Browser should re-launch the Zoom application. If it does not, click the Launch Zoom button in your Internet Browser.
